Phototherapy
Phototherapy is an important modality in the treatment of both psoriasis and atopic eczema and is also used in the treatment of some T cell lymphomas. It is particularly important to nurses who are working in a specialist dermatologistpractice but may also be useful to nurses working in a large general practice who may have their own phototherapy machine. Some time will be spent on this modality, the nature of the light that is used both narrow band UVB and UVA and the types of patients that are suitable, the complications that may arise and the recording methods that are used to assess the patient's total dose. Phototherapy is not without risk both of polymorphous light reactions or reactions to drugs that patients may be taking but also with long term problems associated with early skin cancer development particularly squamous cell skin cancers. Nurses should be able to give patients a balanced view on the pros and cons of this therapy for their condition.
